Journal Entry #1 –
Dunbar visit Sept. 22 – What did you learn from the visit with regard to the
school climate and opportunities for the students?
Upon
arriving at Dunbar, I was very surprised to see the size of the campus and the
facilities that were offered there. We were fortunate enough to visit on
athletic team picture day. So as many of my eager classmates and I anxiously
waited for our tour to begin, Tyler and I observed the behaviors of the
cheerleading squad, the football team, and the cross country team. We began to
realize that these kids were rushing to be older and were trying to act as if
they were in there 20’s. It was very easy to recognize that it was all an act
when one of the students’ parents approached them. The demeanor of the kids
changed completely. This gave me an idea
of what to expect from our students here at the Kids in College program.
During
our tour at Dunbar, I was very impressed by what they had to offer their
students. I especially excited to see the etymology center. I distinctly
remember wishing that I had something like that available to me when I was in
middle school. It was also nice to see that the faculty and staff were so
involved in the engagement of the students. I look forward to meeting the
students who will be in our program, and I look forward to exploring the field
of education.
