Kids in College: Journal 4

Journal Entry #4- Second week Dunbar students come (Date: October 13th and
15th)

After a week of being in charge and in control of the classroom, I was eager to experience what it was like for my peers when I was in charge to just sit back and follow instructions. Victoria and Ty and did a wonderful job with their lesson plan and I enjoyed being a part of it. When Victoria told us that she and Ty wanted us to use the calculators and probes, I was very interested to see what they had in store for us. When I first read over the lesson plan, I was impressed with the activities that Ty and Victoria had planned for us as well,

Once the students arrived, I knew this weeks’ lesson was going to be fun one. I was partnered with Sam Griffith and Tyler Davis on Tuesday, then Tyler on Thursday. We were all on the same page, and it was a very interesting experience. The students were excited to go outside again, and I’m glad that we were blessed with such beautiful weather on both days. As each week progresses, I begin to enjoy this class, and this program, even more.

Journal Entry #3 – First week Dunbar students come (Date: October 6th and 8th)

This week was my time to shine. After a week of assignments, presentations and lesson planning, it was finally time for me take control of an entire classroom. Although I had a partner, or co-teacher, I didn’t have much of a choice other than to take majority of the workload myself. Seeing as I paired myself with a first-year student in their first semester of college, one who was also homeschooled since elementary school; I should have done more to motivate her and I should have expressed the importance of a group effort in college. Through all the adversity and tension, we managed to develop an efficient and successful lesson plan.

Once the kids arrived and the day began, I felt confident in my lesson plan and I was able to see all of my hard work pay off. It was great experience being able to meet all of the excited and eager students from Dunbar. Many of them told me that they look forward to coming back to Randolph each week and it warms my heart knowing that did something right with these young pre-teens. I can’t wait to see what next week has in store for me.

Journal Entry #2 – Anticipation of the students coming—What do you hope to provide for the students? What do you hope to learn?

When the kids arrive, I hope to provide them with a memorable experience that they will never forget. The idea of visiting a college once a week should be a reason for these kids to remember this program however, if they have a mentor that positively impacts their lives, that provide an even better reason to remember this program. I hope to one day come across one of these young students, and have them approach me and ask, “Hey, were you a teacher with the Kids in College at Randolph?”.

I hope to learn how to properly manage a classroom and keep my students engaged through entertaining learning activities. I also hope to learn a little about myself as well. I’m not entirely sold on the idea that I want to be a teacher. I do feel that I want to be in the field of education, I just don’t have the necessary experience to fully commit quite yet. Through this program, I hope to gain the tools necessary to make the best decision for my future.
