Kids in College: Journal 5

Journal #5

Todays lesson, which took place on October 28th and October 30th, was our Halloween lesson. The basis for this lesson was a Fall Festival that involved pumpkins and many other fun festive treats. This lesson was created by Samuel and Holden I believe that the two of them did a wonderful job. It was nice to see how excited the kids were when the pumpkins were brought out and it warmed my heart to see the expressions on their faces.
The students were required to work together to get estimations and it was very easy to see their different personalities clash. At times, when a student said something that differed from the opinion of another student, the students would either change their mind to agree, or they would argue to support their estimation.
While the initial estimation was hectic and filled with challenging rhetoric, the students were able to put their minds together and meet in the middle. It was nice to see the students negotiate and come up with a neutral number. On the second day of the lesson, the students were able to communicate more effectively because we gave them clearer instructions beforehand.
After the estimations were done, and the students found out the actual measurements there was a lot of reconciliation and recognition among the students. They admitted that they were wrong, and apologized to their peers for ever doubting one another. As for the students who were correct, they were respectful about their own success. They did not brag or gloat.
The pumpkin seed counting went smoothly as well. The students had to work together to count hundreds of seeds, which surprised and impressed many of the co0teachers involved. All but a handful of groups split the seeds up evenly amongst one another. Finally, once a student was done if others were still working on seed counting then they would go take some out of there pile and help them count.
Overall, the lesson plan was beautiful. Holden and Sam did great job creating a lesson plan that was both fun and educational. It was very apparent that the students loved the theme and the y truly enjoyed the snacks that they received after their last activity. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot by watching these kids work together.
